Trevor Winstone

Trevor has worked in the High-Power Laser Research Field at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory for the last 37 years. As well as operating the Vulcan Nd:Glass Laser system, much of this time has been in the role of the Central Laser Facility’s Quality Assurance Manager.  He has successfully managed the Vulcan Laser Cleanroom for the past 31 years, fulfilling contracts to supply disc and rod amplifiers to other laser laboratories. The Vulcan 1PW project saw him leading the optic procurement and quality assurance work package as well as the disc amplifier build programme. He worked extensively to install and commission all the 1 metre scale optics within the project.

Trevor was Operations Manager on the Vulcan Laser System from 2006 to 2018, working to optimise delivery of pulses to the various experimental set ups with the Target Areas.

He took on a more project-based role for the EPAC Project as a Project Planner. Trevor sits on the Project Management Committees for both the EPAC Project and the Vulcan 20-20 Project. Alongside the Project Planning role, Trevor is also the Optical Design Authority for the EPAC Project, managing the supply of high specification optics for the project.

Trevor has joined the Vulcan 20-20 Project as the OPCPA Pump Laser Work Package Manager developing layouts and technologies associated with rod and disc amplifiers. As the Vulcan 20-20 Optical Design Authority, he will have a significant role in the specification, procurement and assessment for installation of the large, in excess of 1 m, gratings, mirrors and parabolic focussing optics and specialist optics such as crystals into the 20 Petawatt beamline, from the OPA Amplification stage, through pulse compression to final focus on target.
