Mike was the Ultra Group Leader for a number of years before taking a role in Strategy Development of the team, and has authored and co-authored over 190 publications. He has 3 patents relating to optical tweezers and sensors.
Mike achieved his PhD at the University of Glasgow for Resonance Ionisation Mass Spectroscopy. He has an Honorary Professorship at the University of Sheffield. He received the Meggers Award in 2002, 2006 and 2020.
